Lone Elm Blueberry Smash

The Lone Elm Blueberry Smash follows an old school template. What is a smash? A smash is a cocktail template, that goes at least as far back as Jerry Thomas’ 1862 How to Mix Drinks. It is a concoction of spirits, sugar, and mint. Extra fruit, either in the form of juice or garnish.

Smashes are fun because you can choose your own adventure. Keep the basic template then switch and swap spirits, fruits, sugars, and mints to create your own. We use blueberries, sweet mint, lavender simple syrup, and Lone Elm Wheat Whiskey. During a recent interview with Lone Elm, we discuss how citrus accents their whiskey, so we decided to give it a try. We still want to try the cigar infused old-fashioned.

Five Points Distilling focuses on distilling wheat-based spirits from grain to glass. Located in Forney, TX they use Texas soft red winter wheat and Texas rainwater to produce vodka and whiskey. Like many bourbons, the whiskey is aged in new American white oak, but unlike a bourbon, their whiskey is 90% wheat. Intrigued? Well so were we.

Red winter wheat has a full-bodied whole wheat flavor so we initially thought it would be too much. What we learned is that aging it in new oak in the Texas sun creates an approachable and complex whiskey. Lone Elm Wheat Whiskey has many characteristics of bourbon, but a bit softer and more mellow. It is sure to fool a few bourbon drinkers.

The Lone Elm Blue Berry Smash

The Lone Elm Blueberry Smash is crisp, refreshing, and versatile. Lone Elm Wheat Whiskey compliments and balances with the fruit flavors.

If you like the smash try our take on the mojito and if the fruit is not for you give the Horsecar or Old-Fashioned a try. Maybe even pour this over some smoked ice for some added complexity.
